Dubois into quarters

-

PAWTUCKET — Mount St. Charles senior Matt Dubois earned a spot in the state quarterfinals thanks to a comeback victory over Barrington’s Owen Voigt in the second round Friday afternoon at Slater Park.

After Dubois didn’t drop a game in his opening-round match against North Smithfield junior Celeste Gambardella, the Mountie was blown away, 6-1, by Voigt in the first set. Dubois, who has a walk-on spot secured at Bryant University, came back to win the final two sets, 6-2, 6-3, to claim a spot in Sunday’s quarterfinal against reigning state champion Nick Fontecha of Central.

“I just told him what I usually say to him,” Mount coach Richard Lawrence said of facing Fontecha. “I said ‘You know what your strengths are. You have to do those things. They’re not going to succeed as often as they typically succeed because he’s a very good player, but you have to stay with your strengths.’”

Voigt knocked off Woonsocket No. 1 Khameron Savatdy in the first round.

Mount senior Jacob Lawrence downed Tiverton’s Zach Pacheco, 6-1, 6-2, in the opening round, but a nagging elbow injury forced him to injury default to East Greenwich’s Michael Sack in the second round.

Tolman freshman Jeremy Clark defeated La Salle No. 3 singles standout Matt Maggiacomo, 6-1, 6-2, in the opening round.

Hendricken’s Adita Kini knocked off the Tiger, 6-1, 6-1, in the second round.
