Bellingham salutes top two students
Leah Gerrish tabbed valedictorian; salutatorian honors for Joseph Oliver
BELLINGHAM — Leah Gerrish is the valedictorian and Joseph Oliver the salutatorian of the Bellingham High School Class of 2018, Principal Lucas Giguere has announced.
Gerrish, the daughter of Phillip and Jennifer Gerrish of 5 Granite St., maintains a 4.0 grade point average, and she is a distinguished two-year member of the National Honor Society, which she serves as parliamentarian.
She currently serves as vice president of the senior class.
Since Grade 9, Gerrish has been committed to community service projects that have enriched the school community and the greater Bellingham community. In 2016, she attended the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Conference.
Gerrish developed and implemented
The Blackhawk Tutoring Center, which provides tutorial help for students in academic need. She has been a vital member of the varsity soccer program as well as a percussionist in the school orchestra and school jazz band. Like Theodore Roosevelt, Gerrish believes we should keep our eyes on the stars and our feet on the ground. This fall, Leah will attend Boston College to study finance and psychology.
Oliver, the son of Robert and Colleen Oliver of 50 Prospect St., maintains a 4.0 grade point average, and is a distinguished two-year member of the National Honor Society, serving as president. Currently, he is vice president of the Math Club, president of the Drama Club and Bass Section Leader of the BHS Chorus.
Oliver was accepted into the Massachusetts Central District Chorus for six consecutive years, along with three All-State recommendations. He was also named to the 2018 Massachusetts AllState Chorus. Recently named as a recipient of the Waters Corporation Award for Excellence in Science, Oliver will attend the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in the fall, majoring in mathematics and minoring in music.
