Former House Minority Leader looks to keep his District 48 seat
Brian C. Newberry announced he will run for re-election to his District 48 seat this fall.
NORTH SMITHFIELD — Former House Minority Leader and state Representative Brian C. Newberry, R-Dist. 48, North Smithfield and Burrillville, has announced he will run for re-election to his seat this fall.
Newberry has served as representative for District 48 for 10 years while pursuing an agenda of lower taxes, less regulatory red tape and less government overall, a cause which he has advocated strongly during his Statehouse tenure.
“Since first elected, I have maintained that we do not have a taxing problem in this state, but a spending problem,” Newberry said in a statement on his re-election bid.
“I have always opposed tax increases and supported attempts to reign in bloated government spending. I have fought to eliminate the abuse-ridden legislative grant program and been a consistent advocate against growth in government generally and in attempting to get my legislative colleagues to adopt a different perspective on many issues,” Newberry said.

Newberry said he has also strongly opposed the leadership party where appropriate, “particularly where they squander opportunities to take bold steps to reform our budget process including enactment of a line item veto, make structural changes to our fiscal policies and continue to heap unnecessary regulations on small business that stifle economic growth while simulta- neously doling out corporate welfare for well connected insiders..
“My colleagues and I have always fought to reduce the middle-class tax burden while opposing such giveaways and hope to continue to do so,” Newberry said.
Newberry serves on the House Committee on Labor and the House Committee on Municipal Government.
An attorney specializing in commercial litigation and professional malpractice defense, he is a partner in the law firm of Donovan Hatem LLP. Newberry earned his juris doctorate, magna cum laude, from Temple University School of Law, in 1996. He received his bachelor of arts degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 1993 and earned his high school diploma at Choate Rosemary Hall in 1989, according to his General Assembly biography.
A Little League and Soccer Association coach, and member of Central Congregational Church, Newberry is the former vice chairman of the North Smithfield Republican Town Committee and was the former chairman of the North Smithfield Juvenile Hearing Board.
He is married to Elizabeth, and the Newberrys have three children, Diane, Liam and Aidan.
“I believe I have been a consistent advocate for the people of our rural corner of the state and I am hopeful that the people of North Smithfield and Burrillville have been happy with my efforts on their behalf and will see fit to return me to office this fall,” Newberry said.
