WOONSOCKET – A 20-year-old city man was arrested on three domestic violence charges after he allegedly choked his girlfriend during an argument on Sunday.

Donavan J. Logan, 20, of 166 Valley St., is charged with one count each of domestic strangulation, a felony; domestic simple assault and battery; and domestic refusal to relinquish a telephone.

He’s free on $10,000 personal recognizance after an arraignment in Sixth District Court on Monday, according to the judiciary’s web site. Logan is due in court for another hearing on Oct. 9. In the meantime, the judge instructed him to have no contact with his girlfriend.

The victim, a 21-year-old city woman, told police she and Logan were arguing about their relationship at her Washington Street apartment when the confrontation turned physical. She said Logan had been “extremely agitated” in recent days after the death of a friend.

As the argument grew more heated, she told police, Logan “palmed” her in the face. When she attempted to pushed him away, he grabbed her by the throat with both hands and began squeezing.

Although she didn’t pass out, the victim tapped Logan on the shoulder repeatedly to let him know she was having difficulty breathing and that he should release his grip, according to police.

After he freed her, the victim attempted to call for help from her cell phone, but Logan grabbed it away

from her to prevent her from doing so. She was able to flee the apartment and yell for help. Neighbors apparently

heard the screams and dialed 911.

Logan fled before officers arrived, but a warrant was issued for his arrest.

A few hours later – just before 8 p.m. – police were directed to Logan’s apartment for a well-being check by the same woman he’d allegedly assaulted. A po-

lice report says the caller was worried her boyfriend might harm himself.

Police found Logan in a bedroom and took him into custody without incident.
