Morgan Watson and Marissa Tessier led Mount St. Charles to victory over rival Cumberland.

CUMBERLAND — Mount St. Charles middle hitter Morgan Watson had a match-high six kills to go along with two blocks, while right-side hitter Marissa Tessier chipped in with five kills to lead the Mounties to a 26-24, 25-19, 25-22 victory over rival Cumberland Thursday night at the Wellness Center.

“They played very well and they were scrappy.” Cumberland coach Ruth Plante said. “They served much better than they did [Wednesday] night. They played very good defense and we just made way too many errors. I have to give them credit because they didn’t let the ball hit the floor.”

Cumberland (1-2 Division I) received four kills and three blocks from middle hitter Emma Karten and two kills from outside hitter Bethany Votto. The Clippers went on a 5-0 run late in the opening game to take a 22-21 lead, but a serving error handed control of the game back to Mount, who secured a 26-24 win.

“We talked going into the match about being consistent,” Mount coach Josh D’Abate said. “[Wednesday] night was not our best effort, but tonight we got a good first step on a lot of balls. With these young kids on the floor, it’s nice to get those wins. They have a really talented team over, so this was a good win for us.”

Mount produced another strong finish to the second game, as the visitors scored the game’s final four points after Cumberland cut its deficit to just two.

Thursday’s match started a difficult stretch for the Clippers, who face Barrington Monday and Coventry Thursday next week. Mount St. Charles (2-1 Division I) is off until next Thursday when they travel to Cranston West.
