Raiders rout Barrington
BARRINGTON — Shea High registered 20 unanswered points over the final two quarters on Friday night to snag a 27-10 Division I-A triumph over pesky Barrington at Victory Field.
Junior Jaylen Smith helped the Raiders earn their first lead at 13-10 midway through the third quarter with a 53-yard fumble recovery for a score, though the kick failed. And, with about seven minutes remaining in regulation, senior signal caller Eric Palmer hit Smith on a 75-yard TD aerial before Gio Delgado notched the two-point conversion rush.
Smith tacked on a two-yard scoring jaunt with under three minutes left for the insurance points, which lifted SHS to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in league action.
Sophomore Ben Proulx had opened the scoring with a 10-yard rush on the Eagles’ second possession, and Chace White booted the extra point. After Palmer had found Greg Williams open on a 64-yard TD toss early in the second stanza, White’s 37-yard field goal pushed the hosts in front, 10-7; that’s the way the half ended before Shea’s second-half barrage.
“I thought our defense played very well,” stated veteran mentor Dino Campopiano after the verdict. “Any time you hold a team to 10 points, that’s big, and you’ve got to be happy with that. Offensively, I thought the Barrington defense held us in check, but – in the second half – I was happier with our offensive line; they did a much better job of blocking, and we moved the ball easier.
“I know Jaylen had over 100 yards on the ground, and I know Eric had the same with his arm,” he added. “It wasn’t easy, but I’ll take it.”
