Kipyego, Moison win at invitation­al

PROVIDENCE — St. Raphael All-State distance runner Darius Kipyego and Lincoln junior thrower Kyle Moison picked up impressive victories at Saturday’s RITCA Invitation­al at the PCTA.

A week after breaking the state indoor record in the 800 meters, the Saints’ junior defeated North Kingstown’s Jack Perreault by a second to claim the 1,000-meter title in a time of 2 minutes, 32.7 seconds. In the field, Moison defeated Woonsocket sophomore All-American Logan Coles in the shot put with a top throw of 51 feet, 11 inches.

Moison and Coles reached the medal stand in a pair of events because the two were also superb in the weight throw. Coles tossed the weight 69 feet, .75 inches to finish second to reigning state champion Jacob Ferland of Classical. Moison took fifith with a throw of 67-1, while Cumberland’s Cole Hooper was fifth with a throw of 62-6.25.

The St. Raphael boys returned to Pawtucket with a number of medals. Junior sprinter Jacob Lamothe finished second to Central’s Nath Barjolo in the 55-meter dash in a time of 6.67 seconds. Lamothe, Braxton Fontaine, Eddie Cardona and Joseph Torres teamed up to finish third in the 4x200-meter relay. Fontaine also finished fourth in the long jump.

Woonsocket’s Nick Iarussi lost a jump off in the high jump to finish second with a top clearance of 6-2.

None of the Valley’s female athletes won a title, but St. Raphael All-State distance runner Rachel Mongeau and Woonsocket’s Alissiana Folco each finished second. Mongeau ran the 3,000 meters in 11:19.07 to finish second to La Salle’s Mackenzie Doyle, who won in 11:07.

Folco was second in the long jump with a jump of 17-3.5 and the Villa Novan also finished seventh in the 55-meter hurdles after blowing the field away in the qualifying heats.

Cumberland’s Olivia Belt, Bailee Brown, Elizabeth Pickering and Ally Raposo teamed up to finish third in the 4x800-meter relay in a time of 10:23. Lincoln sophomore Riley Specht was fourth in the 600 meters (1:45.04) and Mount St. Charles freshman Anna Giacobbe was sixth in the 300 meters (45.44).

In the field, Cumberland’s Nicolette Ducharme finished fourth (33-04) in the shot put and Lincoln junior Jackie Andrews finished fifth with a throw of 33-0.75.
