BELLINGHAM — A Worcester County grand jury Wednesday indicted a Bellingham man on a charge of manslaughter in connection with fatal accident in Mendon that killed a 25-year-old Blackstone motorcyclist last October.

The grand jury handed up a five-count indictment in Worcester Superior Court charging Lucas Cook, 30, of 35 Yvonne Road, Bellingham, with involuntary manslaughter, manslaughter by motor vehicle, motor vehicle homicide while under the influence of alcohol, motor vehicle homicide while driving recklessly and driving while under the influence of alcohol (second offense).

Cook remains in custody in lieu of $20,000 cash bail pending his arraignment in the Worcester Superior Court.

Casey Calkins, 25, of Blackstone, died Nov. 7, 2018 at UMass Memorial Medical Center, 17 days after his motorcycle was struck by Cook at around 6:30 p.m. On Oct. 20 near 172 Providence Street, Mendon.

Before he died, Calkins endured a number of sur- geries and lost a leg because of the accident. Police said several nip bottles of alcohol were found on the front seat of the sport utility vehicle Cook was driving and that he failed field sobriety tests.

Calkins was a lifelong resident of Blackstone and worked as a plumber for Wambolt Plumbing of Waltham, Mass. He was a motor sports enthusiast.
