Those classic cars are back in town

‘Summer Cruise’ takes Main Street Wednesday

WOONSOCKET – The sleek Detroit muscle machines of Motor City’s golden age are coming back to Main Street – and soon!

Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt has announced that the first of three “Summer Classic Car Cruises” will take place Wednesday, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Along with piped-in music from DJ/car guru Rich George, antique car-keepers and admirers of the vintage wheels will have much of Main Street – from Depot Square to Market Square – to themselves as the city cordons off a section of the downtown strip for the car show.

Additional car cruises will be held on July 24 and Aug. 21. Rain dates for all three events will be on the next following Wednesday.

“The many gorgeous, meticulous­ly preserved classic beauties starring in the long-running car show makes this a must-attend event,” said Baldelli-Hunt. “A colorful sea of magnificen­t vintage artistry will transform a 1,600-square-foot quadrant of our city’s historic central traffic artery into a classic car stage.”

DJ George will spin popular music guests of all generation­s will be sure to recognize, and Main Street merchants will open during the shows. Food and refreshmen­ts will be available from on-site vendors, and several nearby restaurant­s, including River Falls, Ye Old English Fish ‘n’ Chips, Ocean Cafe and New York Lunch, will be open for those who want a sitdown meal before or after the event.

Main Street will be closed to through traffic and parking after 5 p.m. to make way for those participat­ing in this summer tradition. Free parking is available at nearby municipal lots in Market Square, on Clinton Street, and behind the Coffee Connection on Bernon Street.

For a slice of nostalgia, the mayor says, “Come on downtown and stroll along Main Street where you can admire the vintage view, visit businesses and eat great food.”
