BLACKSTONE VALLEY MEMORIES June 18

- — By BILL MULHOLLAND

1952 Max Surkont, burly Pawtucket right-hander, turned

in his best mound performance since joining the Boston Braves two years ago as he blanked the Chicago Cubs 2-0. Surkont twirled a two-hitter, fanned nine and walked only one in his masterpiece. Surkont got a bigger thrill than usual out of his two-hitter as about 60 of his buddies from the Consolation A. C. were at Braves Field to cheer Max on and worked their way down behind the Braves dugout to salute Max as he came off the field. “I’d better make sure they come the next time I pitch,” said Surkont.

1962 Side-arming right-hander Rollie Landry and Chuck

Connors combined on a five-hitter, fanned four and walked three as Saint Raphael Academy routed Warren 7-1 in an Eastern Division tilt at McCoy Stadium. Phil Bizier paced the Saints’ attack with two doubles and a single, two runs scored and one RBI and Eddie Macksoud chipped in with a two-run single. Had not a 2-1 triumph over Rogers in the season’s opener been thrown out by the Principals Committee on Athletics on a technicality, SRA would reign as Eastern Division titlist. Instead, coach Bobby Perreault’s nine must replay the protested game versus Rogers to determine who will meet undefeated Northern Division champion Cumberland in the semifinals of the state tournament.

1982 Linda Larue of McCormick’s Pub is the leading hitter

in the Pawtucket Recreation Women’s Softball League with 11 hits in 22 at bats for a .500 average. Rounding out the top five batters are Larue’s teammate Helen Phillips (.474), Murphy’s Lounge’s Katie Johnson (.467), Joan Messina of McCormick’s (.440) and Lisa Beauregard (.400) also of McCormick’s is in fifth place. Helen Phillips is the pacesetter in RBI with 10 followed closely by teammate Kathy Phillips with eight.
