1966 The best-of-three final playoffs in the Pee Wee

Divisions of the Pawtucket Boys’ Club-Recreation Department Baseball Leagues began with a single by John Karbowski, a triple by Mike Halpin and a sacrifice bunt by Ken Brown in the third inning as the Secret Agents edged the Mustangs 2-1 in “C” action. In “B” play, Leo Thurber twirled a four-hitter, struck out 19 and belted a solo homer to pace the Colts to a 3-1 victory over the Tigers in eight innings. In Pee Wee A, Dave Arundel clouted a fifth inning round-tripper for the deciding run to give the Nine Aces a 2-1 triumph over the Ants.

1986 Veteran Bill Masuck, a former two-time city champ

and No. 2 seed, captured the Pawtucket Open Men’s Tennis Championship singles title when challenger and No. 1 seed Gary Hermiz was “all cramped up” and unable to compete in the finals. Masuck came from behind to defeat upstart Dave Moran (3-6, 6-2, 6-3) and simply outlasted No. 4 seed Dan Masterson (6-1, 4-6, 6-2) to gain the finals. Hermiz, a finalist in last year’s tourney, beat Rich Patricio (4-6, 6-4, 6-0) and then pitter-patted his way past Dave Izzo in a three-hour marathon (7-5, 4-6, 7-6).
