1953 A great run by Jack Orr after snaring a Dick Lynch pass

on the 30-yard line gave the Saint Raphael Academy football forces a 6-6 comeback tie with a powerful Rogers eleven in a Class A league opener before 1,500 spectators at McCoy Stadium. The play, which covered 42 yards, saw Orr grab the pigskin on the 30 and scramble through the entire Viking squad to score standing up. Coach Earl Lambert singled out Hank Marshall, Georgie Elkas and Vito Pontarelli as the Saints’ top performers, saying “if it wasn’t for those boys Rogers would have run away with it.”

1963 All-Valley halfback Bob LaFlamme was the big cog in

Cumberland’s versatile attack gaining 87 yards on 11 carries, catching two passes for 26 yards and tallying two touchdowns to pace the Clippers to a 25-0 non-league romp over Pawtucket West. LaFlamme scored on an 11-yard run and a 13-yard pass from QB Gerry Gosselin (six of 10 aerials for 110 yards). Leroy Cooney scored on a 30-yard pass from Gosselin and Varnum Elliot smashed over from the one to complete the touchdown parade.

1983 The word going around Division One-North boys’ soc

cer during the preseason was that Burrillville would be the team to beat. So . . . that’s what everybody’s doing beating the Broncos as Woonsocket knocked them off on Tuesday and Cumberland posted a 2-1 win Friday, the Clippers’ second in two starts. Frank Sales booted home a penalty shot and teammate Alex Arteaga increased the lead to 2-0 with a goal 37 seconds before halftime. The Broncos averted a shutout with 10:31 remaining when Chris Guay found the back of the net.
