Saints claim city crown

PAWTUCKET – With an eye towards Saturday’s inaugural Highland Park Invitational, the St. Raphael boys’ cross-country teams adapted a pack mentality for Monday’s Metropolitan Division meet at Slater Park.

On the boys side against Tolman and Shea, the Saints stacked the deck as the first eight runners came from SRA. They finished in two waves, one clocking in at 17:33 while the second wave came in at 17:34. Leading the way was C.J. Magill, who was declared the race’s victor with usual stalwarts Nasavell Medeiros (third) and Darius Kipyego (fifth) also helping the cause as the Saints claimed the Pawtucket city championship with identical 15-50 victories over the Raiders and Tigers.

“We wanted to run as a team and see if we could conserve for Saturday,” said SRA head coach Chris Magill, eyeing a meet that will take place on the same piece of land in Attleboro that used to be known as a golf course and is expected to feature 16 schools from Massachusetts and five from Rhode Island, including La Salle and Cumberland.

The SRA girls improved to 5-1 by sweeping a field that featured Shea, Tolman, Lincoln School and Bay View. St. Raphael junior Rachael Mongeau ran a bit slower than week’s record-setting performance at Slater, but she still did enough to capture first place on Monday with a time of 21:21. Right behind Mongeau was her teammate, Tyla Forbes (21:22).
