Lime Rock Zen meditation sessions nearing end of fall season
Lime Rock Baptist Church resumes the Christian Zen meditation program for the fall season. An interfaith approach to contemplative prayer is being taken, using a Zen Buddhist format.
The final meditation session is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. The sitting will be held at Lime Rock Baptist Church, 1075 Great Road, Lincoln.
The program was initially organized at Lime Rock Baptist Church by the Rev. Eugene Dyszlewski, who is trained in the Tibetan meditation tradition. It is now also under the shared supervision and leadership of two lineage holders from the Daystar Zendo, Sensei Cynthia Taberner and Fr. Kevin Hunt, Roshi, a Zen master and a Trappist Monk.
Zen contributes a format and viewpoint that emerges from Buddhism. It has deep roots going back 2,500 years to India In itself it is not a religion but a “way,” an approach to the spiritual path. The contemplative traditions of Christianity and Buddhism recognize that various and different means are needed to assist as many people as possible on the common journey through life.
From a health perspective, meditation has been demonstrated to be effective for stress reduction. Evidence based mindfulness practices have been shown to have a positive impact on emotional regulatory mechanisms, which allow participants to become less reactive to negative life situations. People skilled at approaching situations from a mindful perspective have an increased capacity to tolerate uncomfortable emotions. Over time many participants develop habitual positive social responses rather than engage in the repetition of maladaptive behavior.
Rev. Dyszlewski will provide an orientation to contemplation for people unfamiliar with the practice. The session will include a sitting meditation, a walking meditation and a dharma teaching There is no cost associated with this program.
