Mayol, Clipper girls excel

SRA’s Pedro Mayol and the Cumberland girls cross country team both finished in second place at Monday’s freshman state championsh­ip meet.

NORTH SCITUATE — St. Raphael standout Pedro Mayol and the Cumberland girls returned home from Ponaganset’s Covered Bridge Trail with runner-up plaques fromMonday’s Freshman state championsh­ip cross country meet.

Mayol, who is the Saints’ No. 3 runner, completed the four-kilometer course in 13 minutes, 21 seconds to finish two seconds behind La Salle’s Blake Santos. Mayol’s teammate, dual-sport athlete Devan Kipyego finished fourth in 13:24 to help the Saints finish third in the team race.

After SRA standout Kaydn Reilly crossed the finish line in 24th, the Saints were competing with La Salle and Bishop Hendricken for the state title, but the Rams and Hawks had their fifth runners cross the line soon after. La Salle won the title with 58 points, while the Hawks scored 76. The Saints finished third with 98 points.

Cumberland didn’t enter a team, but Cole McCue finished seventh in a time of 13:40. Fresh off helping Burrillvil­le regain the Skee Carter Invitation­al title, Bronco Garrett Dailey finished 11th in 13:57. SRA’s Andrew Worden was 13th in 13:59 and Cumberland’s Anderson Jacinto was 18th in 14:25.

Lincoln finished eighth and was led by Patrick Riordan, who was 24th after running a 14:31.

In what sets the stage for Northern Division dual meets for the next three seasons, the Cumberland girls finished second with 63 points, just seven points ahead of third-place Burrillvil­le. East Greenwich dominated the event with just 32 points.

The top local individual was Clipper Grace Carr, who ran the four-kilometer course in 16:06, two spots and 29 seconds ahead of St. Raphael’s

Tayla Forbes. Just three days after running in the Skee Carter Invitation­al, Woonsocket’s Brianlys Simono finished an impressive ninth in 16:36.

Skee Carter Invitation­al champion Haley Allen was 11th in 16:37. The other Bronco scorers were Kaitlyn Potter (15th, 16:50), Emily Allard (19th, 17:12), Madeline LaSata (30th, 17:56) and Madison Ludovici (41st, 18:33).

Cumberland also received solid performanc­es from Annie Anderson (14th, 16:48), Ellie Gaudreau (21st, 17:17), Emma Peterson (26th, 17:36) and Grace Holmander (40th, 18:20).

The Covered Bridge Trail will be the scene for the state’s final dress rehersal for the state meet Saturday in the class championsh­ips.
