1960 Carol McKinnon of Pawtucket was the winner of the

10-lap powder puff derby on Sunday afternoon’s auto races at the Seekonk Speedway. Scoring her first victory of the year, Mrs. McKinnon took the lead from Karen Moriarty on the second lap and was in front through the remainder of the race, winning easily over second place finisher Wanda Peckham of Johnston. JoAnne Robitaille of Coventry was third and Nancy Gustafson of Swansea, who was forced to switch cars just prior to the race when her No. 7 was badly damaged during a collision in the pre-race warm-ups, was fourth.

1970 Tolman fumbled the ball three times, suffered an inter

ception, had rookie sophomore Keith Kearns playing center for Keith Dion (broken hand) and could have juggled away another loss but instead produced a couple of gutsy performances on offense en route to a 14-3 win over Coventry for the Tigers’ first victory of the season. In the opening quarter, senior QB Scott Haggerty engineered the first touchdown, running 34 yards to the two, then scoring on a sneak two plays later. Bill Quinn tallied the other TD on a third period one-yard push.

1990 Bill Girard, Saint Raphael Academy girls’ tennis coach,

was once again happy with the play of his entire roster as the Saints defeated Tolman 5-2, improved to 13-0 and experienced a division championship season for the first time. Scoring points for SRA were Mindy MacLane (6-2, 2-6, 6-3), Laura Karkos (6-1, 6-2) and Aimee Riendeau (3-6, 6-2, 6-4) in singles play along with the doubles tandems of Tracey MacLane-Shannon Bailey (6-1, 4-6, 6-2) and Melissa Lamb-Julie Finucci (4-6, 6-1, 6-4). Alyson Hosey (6-2, 7-6) in singles and doubles duo Kim Westgate-Kelly Hetu (6-3, 7-6) tallied for Tiger coach Jackie Murphy.
