Scouts honor local ‘Y’
Eagle Scouts start ambitious project to aid MacColl ‘Y’
LINCOLN — “A Boy Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent.”
Those are the 12 principles a Boy Scout lives by and no one exemplifies those principles more than Christopher and Andrew Ferretti, two brothers who belong to Boy Scout Troop 1 Manville.
On Saturday, Christopher and Andrew kicked off an ambitious project to support the MacColl YMCA on Breakneck Road as part of an Eagle Scout Service Project. The boys will be building a gaga ball pit, signage, and an outdoor classroom that MacColl YMCA staff members say will benefit the entire community.
Christopher and Andrew, both 11th Grade students at the Blackstone Valley Prep Academy, worked rigorously over
the course of several months to coordinate the entire project. This month will mark the culmination of their efforts.
On Saturday, the the two scouts were near the community pool digging the post holes and placing the posts in cement for the trail markers and for the outdoor classroom benches. Helping out were their parents, Marco and Sandi Ferretti, fellow scouts and friends, D.J. Keaton and Noah Stager, and Assistant Scoutmaster Tammy Lataille and her son, Matt Riendeau.
On Saturday, Oct. 26, they will return to build the panels for the ga-ga ball pit. Ga-ga is a fast paced, high energy sport played in an octagonal pit.
Materials and supplies for the projects were donated by
Douglas Lumber.
“These projects will enhance the experience of our members by providing more opportunities to learn and play,” said Charlie Clifford, CEO of the YMCA of Pawtucket. “We are proud to work with Christopher and Andrew, and appreciate their commitment to help make our community stronger.”
“Andrew and Christopher are awesome scouts and excellent leaders, and we are very proud of them,” said Troop 1 Manville Scoutmaster George DeFond.
