Davies falls to Chieftains
Experienced Ponaganset too big for young Davies squad
Davies Tech shows improvement despite loss to Ponaganset
PAWTUCKET – Davies Tech may have suffered its seventh straight Division IV loss to Ponaganset at Pariseau Field on Saturday, but head coach Henry Cabral indicated he saw his group continue to make strides despite the 35-8 loss.
“I was very pleased with how are kids competed right up until the end,” he said after his club dropped to 0-8 overall. “I thought (sophomore quarterback) Matt Patenaude had a pretty good game for us through the air; Ponaganset is really big and aggressive up front, so they’re tough to run on. That was definitely a mismatch for us.
“Still, he went 11-for-21 for 130 yards and a score, and he also ran for about 35 yards, so he played well,” he added. “The difference was they were more game-ready than we were. They’re huge up front, and it’s easy to see why they’re one of the two best teams in our division.”
The Chieftains started quickly, with senior signal caller Zach Silvaggio sneaking it in for a two-yard touchdown in the first quarter, but the PAT kick failed.
Not long after, Ryan Smith hauled in a 10-yard TD toss from Silvaggio, and the latter threw to Aaron Parenteau for the two-point conversion before Marcus Carpenter produced a 50-yard jaunt to paydirt to give Ponaganset the 21-0 advantage at the end of the period.
It also tacked on two more in the second, those courtesy of Silvaggio’s 12-yard strike to Parenteau and Carpenter’s 20-yard hustle to the end zone. After each, Rya DeRoche booted the extra points.
Behind 35-0 at the break, the Patriots finally got on the scoreboard when Patenaude found senior standout T.J.
Lach on a 30-yard pitch-and-catch for the TD.
That tandem also hooked up for the two-point try.
