Clippers win pair of duals

-

PROVIDENCE – Representatives from every class came together for Cumberland High during a pair of successful Headley Division dual-meet victories over Toll Gate (100-8) ad Smithfield (75-33) at the Providence Career & Technical Academy fieldhouse on Monday night.

It started with junior Bailee Brown’s triumph in the 3,000 meters (11:17.05), then sophomore Chloe Jacinto captured the 1,500 (5:28.69) before senior captain Shakira DePia skated to the crown in the 300 (45.38).

One event later, freshman sensation Grace Carr cruised to the triumph in the 600 (3:17.80).

But there were so many other pivotal point getters, as the Clippers swept three events and nearly did it four other times. Junior Olivia Belt collected a pair of runner-up finishes in the 3,000 (11:43.60) and 600 (1:47.50), while

classmate Nicolette Ducharme did the same in the 20-pound weight throw (46-7) and shot put (38-5 ¼); and sophomore Alia Nigri took second in the long jump (15-7 ½) and third in the 55 hurdles (10.29).

Others notching seconds were frosh Emma Peterson in the 1,500; senior Kayla Halpert in the 55 dash; junior Brynn Eckman in the 300; junior Sarah Lanzi in the 1,000; and sophomore Karla Evangelista in the high jump.

In another double-dual meet, Lincoln settled for a split, edging East Providence (49-37) while falling to West Warwick by the same score.

The Lions achieved that with excellence in both the distance and throwing events, as sophomore Carson Cole took the 3,000 (12:58.95), senior Abigail O’Hern the 1,500 (5:34.54), junior Riley Specht the 1,000 (3:20.79), junior Hayley Chartier the shot put (31-6) and senior captain Ally Plante the 20-pound weight throw (44-7 ¼).

Actually, junior Abby Gill helped out with another victory in the 55 hurdles (9.90).

It should be noted that O’Hern chipped in a second in the 1,000; Plante a runner-up in the shot; senior Molly Thibaudeau the same in the weight toss; and senior Ashley Thibault a second in the 1,500 and third in the 1,000.

Woonsocket may have dropped a tough 58-50 verdict to pesky East Greenwich on Monday night, but it rebounded with an 85-7 clubbing of Blackstone Valley Prep.

The Villa Novans only racked up three wins in the overall double-dual meet, courtesy of junior Dajonna Lewis in the 55 dash (7.70), sophomore Charity Harlan in the 300 (47.57) and classmate Jazarah Alexis in the high jump (4-10).

Harlan actually added a runner-up in the long jump (15-3 ¼), while Lewis took a close third just 1 ¼ inches behind; junior Nahum Greene snared second in the 55 dash (8.02); and classmate Nicole Dioh another second in the 1,000 (3:23.39).

Mount St. Charles nearly pulled off a triple-dual meet sweep after coasting past Narragansett (85-0) and Exeter/ West Greenwich (62-40), but fell just shy after sustaining a tough 49-44 loss to Moses Brown at the PCTA fieldhouse.

Versatile junior Isabel Deslaurniers led the charge, winning the taxing 3,000 (14:42.30), then finishing third in the 20-pound weight throw (13-5 ½). What really helped the Mounties post those two triumphs came in the form of two relays, both of which reigned.

Still, there were other key scorers, among them freshman Ava Noecker (second in the 3,000); senior Julia Kamp (runner-up in the 600); and sophomore Anna Giacobbe (second in the 300).

As for the Pride, super sophomore Lucy Noris soared to the 3,000 win in 5:07.55; and classmate Folake Olagundoye snatched third in the 55 dash (8.05).

**

In Bayha/Dwyer Division action, North Smithfield pounded Central (71-38) but at the same time received a blow from Cranston East (72-37).

Still, sophomore Jackie deRonde produced a fine overall outing with a victory in the 55 hurdles (10.62) and a third in the high jump (5-6), while the Brandao sister tandem of senior Alexia and sophomore Katarina claimed second and third, respectively, in the 3,000.

The elder also took third in the 1,500 (6:39.15) to complete the tough double.

Perhaps the story of the meet, however, came from junior Thao Nguyen, who not only finished second in the 300 (46.60) and long jump (13-9 ¼) but contributed a third in the 55 dash (8.23).

Like the Northmen, St. Raphael Academy utilized a sister duet to snag a 55-33 verdict over Bay View, though it also suffered a 77-32 defeat to Pilgrim.

Sophomore Christine and senior Faith Kizekai finished 1-2 in the 55 dash (with respective clockings of 7.73 and 7.74), while senior Stephanie Murphy flew to the win in the 55 hurdles (10.17); junior Rachael Mongeau in the 1,000 (3:14.14); and sophomore Elizabeth Murphy reigned in the high jump (4-8).

Junior Jordan Cournoyer almost won as well, but had to settle for second in the long jump (15-4 ½); turns out, Pilgrim freshman Dasani Stewart manufactured a leap just 1 ¼ inches beyond Cournoyer’s best.

Actually, Central Falls assembled a pretty solid collective performance itself in victories over Scituate (3717) and Wheeler (31-24), though it did drop a 38-26 decision to Juanita Sanchez.

Junior Elaine Vaz Ramos captured the shot put (29-8) and placed runner-up in the 20-pound weight heave (39-1 ¼), with sophomore Katherine Rocha earning second in the 55 dash (8.397) and third in the 300 (47.38). At the same time, classmate Yageilys Galva reversed it, taking second in the 300 (47.35) and third in the dash (8.62).

Senior Eliane Chantre mustered third in the weight (33-0) for another point.

Finally, Tolman celebrated its first win of the winter campaign with a thrilling 33-29 triumph over Ponaganset, though fell to both Mount Hope (69-31) and Chariho (80-22).

It did so on the strength of its weight girls, as senior Abbie Jammeh registered firsts in the shot (27-0 ½) and 20-pound weight throw (26-3); she took the latter event by a scant 2 ¾ inches, which left the Chargers’ Stacia DelBonis in second.

She also led a 1-2-3 sweep in the put, thanks to senior Marcia Barbosa (22-11) and junior Amara Patel (227 ½). Jammeh even managed a close fourth in the long jump (12-2 ¼).

Archrival Shea didn’t fare as well, losing to Chariho (90-8), the Chieftains (38-14) and Mount Hope (8010). Incredibly, it also dropped an 1817 heartbreaker to Middletown for its fourth loss of the night.

One primary highlight came in the 55 hurdles, when junior Keynalee Huyke placed second in 10.73.
