WOONSOCKET – A 42-year-old city woman was treated for a hand wound at Landmark Medical Center after she was stabbed by her boyfriend, police said.

Jackson Rivera, 36, of 130 East School St., was arrested on one count of domestic felony assault shortly before 2 p.m. on Sunday.

After being summoned to Rivera’s home for a report of a quarrel, police said they found the victim shaken and bleeding profusely from a laceration near her thumb.

She told police Rivera was upset with her because angry with her because there were no cigarettes left in the house. She tried to lock herself in the bedroom, but he kicked in the door and began swinging what was described at “sword” at a household appliance.

Rivera then grabbed a knife from the kitchen and began swinging it at her, cutting her thumb.

Rivera told police his girlfriend unintentionally stabbed herself when she tried to attack him with the knife, but “there was no evidence to indicate that happened,” Officer Daniel Glod’s report says. Another witness told officers that Rivera was “swinging the knife aggressively” at the victim and had grabbed her by the hair before dragging her into the kitchen and stabbing her in the hand.

Police found Rivera outside the apartment when they arrived. He was taken into custody without incident.

In addition to the felony assault, prosecutors charged Rivera with being in violation of his probation on a 2013 conviction for first-degree robbery following an appearance in court on Monday. He’s been convicted of that crime twice since 2005.

He’s due in Superior Court for a violation hearing on Feb. 17, according to the judiciary’s web site.
