Mounties win in 2OTs

PROVIDENCE — Twice the Mount St. Charles boys basketball team was a second away from qualifying for the playoffs and twice Times2 STEM scored at the buzzer to keep the contest going.

Finally, in double overtime Ben Ellis hit a free throw with 15 seconds remaining to put the Mounties ahead and they made a defensive stop in a 7271 Division III victory

“I give the kids a lot of credit for their mental toughness after two opportunit­ies slipped through their fingers,” Mount coach Henry Coleman said. “In the second overtime they were able to see it through.”

Mount St. Charles (7-8 Division III) secured a playoff spot with the victory. Senior guard Tommy Burke scored a game-high 26 points thanks to six 3-pointers, while Ellis knocked down four 3-pointers and finished with 17 points. The Mounties host St. Patrick Friday night.

Times2 received a teamhigh 22 points and three 3-pointers from Jason Peters. Ahmad Nybally sent the game to overtime when his last-second basket tied the game at 55 and Paul Pinkrah (16 points) sent the game to a second overtime with a buzzer beater to tie the game at 62.
