1966 Joe Brozowski of New York Lace Store captured the

Darlington American Little League first half batting title banging out 13 hits in 25 at bats for an average of .520 with Gary O’Brien of Tom’s Shamrocks second at .457 and FOP’s Dave Bucci next at .455. O’Brien led in doubles with six, home runs with three, was the busiest hurler working 34 innings and was tied with Ron Johnson of Carter Rice with five wins. Strikeout king Billy Britt whiffed 68 batters in 30 innings, three more than O’Brien had.

1986 Ronald Collette of Lincoln, a 59-year-old who has

been playing golf for 30 years, recorded his first hole-in-one accomplishing the feat on the 125-yard, par-3, sixth hole at Swansea Country Club knocking his No. 5-iron tee shot into the cup on one bounce. Oddly, his playing companions in the foursome collected a birdie (2), a par (3) and a bogey (4) on the same hole. Stanley Budz of Cranston had the birdie, Larry Newton of North Attleboro registered the par and Collette’s wife, Angela, stroked the bogey.

1996 Steve Lauzon twirled a one-hitter, whiffed five and

walked two to help Cumberland Post to a thrilling 1-0 triumph over R & R Construction in an American Legion contest. In the first inning, John Scullin reached on a walk, stole second and – after Felix Ramos and Chris Mercer both flied out to left – Steve Lemieux delivered the game-winning hit. Lemieux led the locals’ attack with a single, double and triple plus the lone RBI.
