Some city residents can vote in primary today
Seats on legislative committees are being contested
WOONSOCKET Heads up voters: Though there aren’t any major contests involved, there is indeed a primary today, but only for about half the city.
At issue are seats in two legislative district committees Representative District Committee for House District 50 and the Senate District Committee for Senate District 20.
Races for seats on these boards are rarely contested and most people who aren’t involved in the nitty gritty of electoral mechanics don’t even know what it is that these committees do. The sole purpose they exist is to endorse candidates who are running for the legislative posts in the areas they cover. Usually, the committees meet only as often as necessary to do their job sometimes as infrequently as once a year.
In the House District Committee 50 races, there are six candidates twice as many as the available number of seats. And in the Senatorial District 20 Committee contest there are nine candidates for six available seats, including three from the portion of District 20 that lies in Cumberland.
The candidates in the committee races for District 50 are Christopher M. Dubois, 33 Collins Ave; Jeannine A. Giguere agnon, 60 Oxford Ave; Vaughan A. Miller, 780 Park Ave.; John R Monse Jr., 21 E. Orchard St.; and Charmaine Webster, 37 Lincoln St.
In the Senate District 20 committee races, they are Johnathan D. Berard, 160 Morton Ave.; Douglas E. Connell, 142 Woodhaven Road; Angelo A. Mencucci Jr.,
