Free talk offered by historian Erik Chaput on the Dorr Rebellion

3rofessor Chaput will present “The 3eople’s 0artyr” and the orr 5ebellion an e ploration of the life of Thomas :ilson orr and the 1842 5hode Island rebellion that bears his name. Thomas orr’s armed attempt at constituti­onal reform set off a firestorm of debate over the nature of the people’s sovereignt­y in $merica.

This year’s series is presented as part of the 5hode Island Historical Society’s Taking a Stand in 5hode Island, a yearlong e amination of how the people who have called this place home, from the 17th century to the recent past, have identified aspects of society that needed to shift and how they worked to change them.

He is the author of The 3eople’s 0artyr Thomas :ilson orr and His 1842 5hode Island 5ebellion University 3ress of .ansas, 2013 . 3rofessor Chaput teaches $merican history in the School of Continuing (ducation at 3rovidence College and The /awrencevil­le School in 1ew -ersey. 3rofessor Chaput’s research has appeared in numerous publicatio­ns, including 5eviews in $merican History, 5hode Island History, Common-3lace, $merican 1ineteenth Century History, The 1ew (ngland 4uarterly, the U.S. Catholic Historian, The Catholic Historical 5eview, Historical 1ew Hampshire, and the Historical -ournal of 0assachuse­tts.
