1963 Art Mitsmenn won a scoring duel with Russ Gregory

as St. Leo’s opened the second round of the Blackstone Valley CYO Basketball Grammar Division by defeating Holy Trinity 61-40. Mitsmenn racked up a league record high total for the season of 35 points as St. Leo’s made it seven straight victories, while Gregory, who shared the old mark of 31, finished with 28 points in a losing effort. In other action, Paul Alves netted 19 points to pace St. Patrick’s to a 27-24 win over Sacred Heart of Central Falls led by Tom Farley’s 15 points.

1973 Coach Kevin Dunne’s Davies Vocational quintet

tasted its first Interscholastic League victory ever as they rolled to a 57-46 verdict over Ponagansett in a Suburban Division III tilt. Bill Murphy, a senior who hails from Lincoln, tallied a seasonal high of 24 points, connecting on 11 of 18 shots from the floor. Rick Messier and Steve Nyzio, both Central Falls’ natives, supported Murphy’s 24-point performance with 12 and 10 points, respectively. The Patriots now sport a 1-4 league record.

1983 Tolman’s Lori Poulin and Central Falls’ Kim Char

bonneau were nearly unstoppable but Poulin had a little more help as the Tigers rolled past the Warriors 63-36 in Class B Met play. Poulin torched the twines for 29 points while Charbonneau rang up 23 points for coach Carol Salhany. In another Class B Met tilt, coach John Kazarian’s Shea quintet lost its shooting touch, hitting on only 20% of their shots, and paid dearly for its erring ways suffering a 47-25 defeat to visiting Classical. Laurie Bailey scored 18 points despite feeling sub-par before the game.
