BLACKSTONE VALLEY MEMORIES

January 30

- — By BILL MULHOLLAND

1963 From leading scorer Jimmy McNaught of Central Falls to Pawtucket Vocational’s Mike Cabral in eighth place, the positions of the top Blackstone Valley schoolboy scorers remained unchanged through the two most recent dates.

McNaught still appears headed for an easy defense of his scoring crown, racking up 384 points in 15 games for a 25.8 average, while Dick Rouleau of Sacred Heart Academy gained a little ground but is well back with a 20.5 mark. Rounding out the top eight point-getters are Tolman’s Tom Smile (19.1), Joe Dupras of SHA (16.6) and Tolman’s Don Suggs (16.4), while Voke teammates Bill St. Angelo (16.38), Billy Donnelly (12.4) and Cabral (10.8) are next.

1973 Defending champion Sleepy Hollow surpassed the

century mark for the second time this season as five players dented double digits to lead a 104-73 win over Walsh Liquors in a Senior Alumni Basketball League contest at the Pawtucket Boys’ Club.

Bob Thibodeau and Larry Caswell were the top guns for the winners with 23 and 21 points, respectively, followed by Rich Gagnon with 15, Buster Wall 14 and Mike Smith 12. In other league action, Bob Whitehead, who was fouled just as time expired, missed his chance at the charity stripe which would have forced the game into overtime as Pleasant Lounge survived a scare and gained a close 73-72 triumph over Rynne’s Sports.

1993 Paula McVeigh hit a game-high 21 points and Tanya Kinosian and Shawna Thibideau chipped in with eight each as Tolman defeated Mount St. Charles 50-38 in a Class B-North contest.

In another B-North tilt, Erin Corrigan and Jenny Zapata hooped 10 points each, but it was not enough as Central Falls’ offense sputtered in the second period and that was basically the difference with Scituate edging the Warriors 48-44. In Class C action, nine players scored points for Shea, with Tara Lambert’s nine leading the way, as the Raiders barely broke a sweat in beating Fatima 36-7 and improved to 8-3 in Class play.
