BLACKSTONE VALLEY MEMORIES

April 15

- — By BILL MULHOLLAND

1950 Veteran Pawtucket East baseball mentor Alex Nahigian’s hopes for the coming season will rest on four holdovers from last year’s club in rugged catcher George Boyce, first baseman Bob Sullivan, centerfielder Walt Richard and curve-balling hurler Wendell Rounds. The infield has Pete Kosty at second, Bob Daniels at shortstop and Rounds and sophomore Dave Fish, the No. 2 pitcher, dividing time at third. Sophomore Stan Ross is scheduled to start in right field with Bob Maroney in left. Backing up Rounds and Fish on the rubber will be righthanders sophomore Charlie Hatch and senior Gerry Duffy. 1960 Ted McConnon, who replaced long-time coach Alex Na

higian, inherits a completely veteran team, including two standout pitchers, making Tolman the odds-on favorite to capture a third straight Eastern Division pennant. The infield starts husky Bob Johnson at first, little Don Gauvin at second, All-Valley defensive standout Kenny Wiberg at shortstop and Tommy Humphrey at the hot corner. The flychasers are Lew Godinho in left, All-Valley Johnny Harker in center and All-Valley Bobby Breault (.419) in right. All-Valley hurler Mike Smith is the ace of the pitching corps with lefty Joe DaCruz as the No. 2 pitcher, while scrappy All-Valley Teddy Dolan will be the Tigers’ backstop.

1970 Ray Thurber’s RBI single and Bert Dugay’s two-run

single in the sixth inning paced Woonsocket to a 6-5 win over Cumberland in Northern Division action. Dugay led the Villa Novans’ 10-hit attack with two singles, two RBI and one run scored, winning pitcher Vin Cultera rapped two singles and Mike Richards drove in two runs, while Mike Forte and Dave Zyons collected two hits each and Mark Crozier tallied twice for the Clippers. Cultera, who yielded nine hits, fanned seven and walked three, struck out Crozier with runners on first and third and two outs to end the game.
