EAST PROVIDENCE – In a big spot with the game on the line, one of the youngest members of the Mount St. Charles baseball team came through in a major way.

Freshman right-hander Connor Thibault completed a two-inning relief stint with a swinging strikeout that came with the bases loaded with East Providence baserunners and two down in the bottom of the seventh inning. The punchout helped the Mounties escape Pierce Field with a 2-1 victory on Monday afternoon.

Thibault totaled two scoreless innings with two strikeouts as MSC added to the program’s early-season run of strong pitching. The Townies ran into an out at the plate that concluded the sixth inning – Mount senior shortstop Ceejay Laquerre had plenty on the throw after a pickoff attempt at third base came close to haunting the Mounties in a major way – but found themselves in prime position to do some serious damage in the seventh.

East Providence had runners on second and third when MSC head coach Paul Jacques decided the best option was to issue an intentional walk to cleanup batter Elijah Barber. Ultimately, the game’s defining moment didn’t prove too big for Thibault, who threw 45 pitches.

“To have the confidence to throw the pitches when it mattered, especially with the bases loaded, that was huge,” said Jacques.

Sophomore Garrick Godin started Monday’s contest and did not allow an earned run in five innings. Godin struck out four and walked three. He threw 86 pitches.

“I was hoping to get five innings from Godin. Anything more would have been the cherry on top of the cake,” said Jacques. “We’re going to need every arm we have.”

The Mounties (1-1, Division I) scratched out single runs in the first and second innings before asking their pitchers to carry the day.

A double steal led to the first run as senior captain Brendan Donahue scored with junior Gage Jacques swiping second. The second run was the result of a twoout single by sophomore A.J. Parrillo. The No. 9 batter in Mount’s lineup hit the ball off the first-base bag, a break that allowed senior captain Eddie Mulligan to score to make it 2-0.

The Townies (1-1, Division I) got one run back in the bottom of the second, the result of one of the three errors committed by Mount. The visitors did look sharp in the fifth as Laquerre started an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.

Mount’s next game is Wednesday at Portsmouth.
