BLACKSTONE VALLEY MEMORIES November 20
1965 Joe Santos and Mike Calabro were responsible for
all the game’s points to spark coach Mike Mooney’s Slater eleven to a dominating 25-0 whitewash over the Saint Raphael Academy freshmen at McCoy Stadium to clinch the Pawtucket Junior High School crown for the second straight year. Santos scored on a 30-yard end run and a 75-yard jaunt, while Calabro tallied on a 20-yard gallop, had a 40-yard picksix and also rushed an extra point. Glenn McDonald and Ed Noonan were the defensive stars for Slater, while Brian Dugas and Clark Gray played well for the Saints.
1985
Heather Grimshaw, Seekonk’s precocious sophomore harrier who capped her outstanding season with a fourthplace finish in the Massachusetts State Championships, heads The Evening Times’ All-Area Girls’ Cross Country First Team. The other Massachusetts first teamers are Grimshaw’s soph teammate Jill Baldani, Maureen Bibeault of Bishop Feehan and North Attleboro’s Karen Violet. Representing the Blackstone Valley schools are Patricia (Pam) McDermott of Cumberland and Shea’s Kathy Corcoran who was the individual winner of the Class B championship race.
1995
Becky Pereira, a former Saint Raphael Academy harrier standout, closed out her freshman season at URI by competing in the prestigious Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships at Boston’s Franklin Park. Pereira toured the 3,000-meter course in 19:49. Pereira also earned selection to the All-New England Division I Team by virtue of her 20thplace finish in the New England Championships, also held at Franklin Park.
