BLACKSTONE VALLEY MEMORIES April 9

- — By BILL MULHOLLAND

1951

Coach Barney Garrity has six veterans returning in George Lovett, Ray Killeen, Chet Hanewich, Roy Guarino, Pete Miniati and Bill Parenteau that should have Saint Raphael Academy contending for the Eastern Division baseball crown. The starting infield has Lovett (.280), a flawless fielder, at first base, Al Kennedy (.406), a powerful left-handed slugger, at second, speedster Guarino (.277) at shortstop and 1950 All-Valley Killeen (.343) at the hot corner. The flychasers are George Agostini, Johnny Higgins and speedy Ralph D’Ambra, with Parenteau, a fast-balling lefty and Miniati heading the mound corps, while Hanewich, a big lad, is behind the plate.

1961 Dick Lynch begins his first season as baseball coach

for his alma mater, Saint Raphael Academy, with no experienced pitchers. The infield is comprised of Bob Lund at first base and slick fielding veterans Billy Burgess at second, Chuck Connors at shortstop and Ronnie Ridolfi at third. The outfield shapes up well with fleet sophomore Jimmy Bizier in left and brother Phil Bizier in center with Tom Ridolfi and soph Fran Quinn battling for the right field spot. Roland Landry and sophomore Phil Healey are the leading hurling candidates, while Ed Macksoud, standing only 5-foot-7 and weighing 140 pounds, looms as the catcher.

1971 Saint Raphael Academy baseball coach Don Faulkner, in his second year at the helm, is strong defensively and on the mound but not overpowering offensively. The infield starts veteran Ed Quinn at first base, Gary O’Brien returns at second, sophomore Norm Scherza fills the gap at shortstop and vet Tom MacLane is back at third. The Dubuc brothers, senior Ray and junior Chuck, will hold down two of the outfield slots with Dave Denelle, Tom Olivo and Dave McLaughlin sharing the other. Right-hander Brian Randall and southpaw Rich Masterson gives SRA a good one-two combination on the hill with Denelle working relief, while promising sophomore Tom Asermelly is behind the plate.
