John Wainwright, Rangers’ hurler, came close to a no-hitter last night at McCoy Stadium but fate dealt him a hard blow in the last inning and the West High redhead wound up losing a 2-0 verdict to the Redjackets in a TwiHigh tilt. Tommy Ingham’s high hopper was the first hit off Wainwright, Ray Mailhot’s double plated Ingham and Mailhot scored on an error and that was the game in a nutshell. Winning pitcher Charlie Hatch spun a five-hitter, struck out 10 and walked only two, while Wainwright allowed two hits, fanned five and passed one.

1960

Tim Kaplan emerged the victor in a classic pitcher’s duel with Steve Caffrey as both posted one-hitters in a 2-1 win over the Kennedy-Collins Colts by Standard Transportation in a Darlington American Little League nail-biter. Kaplan struck out 14 and walked four and Caffrey fanned nine and passed two batters. Steve Wallach had the only hit off Steve Caffrey with a single in the fourth inning, while Garry Caffrey’s double in the sixth frame ended Kaplan’s no-hitter.

1970

George Donnell scattered five hits, fanned seven and walked two to lead Fierlit-Korzen Post of Central Falls to a 2-0 win over Cumberland Post 14 in American Legion action at the Berkeley Oval. F-K tallied both runs in the second inning on consecutive singles by Ernie Crowell, Joe Braganca and Don Carter and John Harwood followed with a two-run single. Braganca paced the winners’ attack with three hits for the defending state champions, while Mark Crozier rapped two hits in a losing effort.
