Deal keeps midfielder with team through 2026

FOXBORO — The New England Revolution re-signed veteran midfield captain Carles Gil to a multi-year contract extension on Thursday that will keep him in Foxboro through the 2026 Major League Soccer season.

Gil’s contract includes a club option for 2027 and will occupy a designated player slot on the Revolution roster. The two-time MLS MVP, two-time Best XI selection and three-time league all-star is the league leader in assists since arriving in 2019 and ranks fourth in club history with 112 goals across all competitions.

The decision to extend the 31-year-old midfield anchor has been one that Revolution Sporting Director Curt Onfalo has been working on since taking over the position.

“When I stepped into the Sporting Director role, the work immediately began to extend Carles Gil and ensure he would continue his remarkable MLS career right here in New England,” Onalfo said. “Carles has been one of the most impactful players in our league since the day he arrived, and he will go down in history as one of the greatest ever to wear a Revolution uniform. For those of us within the club and all those who support it, Carles delivers everything you could ask of a captain and leader. We are extremely pleased to know that Carles Gil will continue to lead the Revolution for years to come.”

Gil has logged 68 assists in MLS play, a league-best total in both regular season and playoffs, and is 10 away from the club record. The Spaniard also has 33 goals in regular season games, appearing in 135 games with 125 starts. In the playoffs, Gil has two goals and five assists in eight starts, helping guide the Revs to the Eastern Conference Final in 2020.
