Bus trip to the ballet and visit with puppies highlights week

- By DAWN GOFF

Every month the senior center has bus trips for shopping, to special restaurants or events. This month’s bus trip was to Sapinsley Hall, Nazarian Center at Rhode Island College to see The State Ballet of Rhode Island presentation of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” a Shakespeare-Inspired Comedic Ballet with musical compositions by Felix Mendelssohn. I’ve never done one of their bus trips before but this one did look interesting, so I signed up.

We boarded the bus just before 9 for the 10 AM show. The presentation was listed as “Project Ballet in Education” and the cost was only $7.00 for the show and transportation. When we arrived, we were escorted to our front row seats. Ana Marsden Fox, daughter of State Ballet founder Herci Marsen, was sitting on stage. She also gave us a beautiful program book that was full of information on the 64-year run of the ballet company and her mom who is in her 80’s and still teaches. She also shared with us that her nine-year-old granddaughter Anika Marceau, daughter of her daughter Shana Fox Marceau one of the show’s choreographers, was in the show. She is the four generation of dancers in the family.

When the curtain went up for the first act there were some of the most beautiful fairies dancing on the stage. I had seen the movie years ago with Mickey Rooney playing the part of the misguided Puck, so I did have a basic knowledge of the story. Our hand out explained the story of the young lovers who Puck mistakingly makes fall in love with the wrong person. The King and Queen of the fairs where amazing dancers as were the young lead dancers Rebecca DeVivo, and Ashley Harrington as the young lovers. Puck, danced by Taegan Moran was a comical stand out.

The second act was full of all the dancers at the wedding party for the people and then the fairies. All of the dancers were very talented and the costumes were just beautiful. I am so glad to we had the opportunity to see the ballet and will be happy to go again.

After the show we went to Benjamin’s in Seekonk for a delicious lunch.

Ever since we lost Tinker Bell people have been asking me if I was going to get a second dog. I have given it a lot of thought over the last two years but every time I do I talk myself out of it. People always say having two dogs is like having one but that is not true. Two dogs are twice the work, vet bills, and grooming bills. Then there would be a training class. On the flip side two dogs are twice the love.

As for Wendy, I am not so sure she wants another dog in the house. She seems to be really loving being the only dog and getting all the attention.

I am telling you this because this weekend I almost committed to a second dog. Our friend Candy invited me to visit her English Bull Dog Emma and her seven six-weekold puppies. I fell in love with the puppies as soon as I walked in the house. I held one little girl for most of the time I was visiting. She was so comfortable in my arms that she just curled up and fell asleep. I went so are as saying what I would call her if I adopted her “Tiger Lilly.”

The problem is English bull dogs are so cute as puppies but full grown they are a strong heavy breed that thinks they are little. They love to be loved and try to get in your lap. They could easily knock me over or hurt Wendy while playing. I think I was lucky that Emma and her sisters were there to show me how big and strong they can get.

Have a great week and if you see us around town be sure to say Hi.
