Pawtucket dominates E-WG

-

PAWTUCKET - The Pawtucket softball team exploded for 10 runs in the first inning and never looked back in a 13-0 mercy-rule triumph over Exeter/West Greenwich at Max Read Field on Wednesday.

Now 3-0 in Division III, Pawtucket received a five-inning no-hitter from Janayah Gordon that featured 12 strikeouts. Her batterymate Cheyenne Cooper paced Pawtucket’s 12-hit attack with three hits and five RBI. Gianna Lopes had two hits and three RBI while Gordon helped her own cause with two hits. Clara Perez finished with two hits and scored three times. NOVANS SUFFER LOSS

FOSTER — Woonsocket led undefeated Ponaganset going into the bottom of the fifth inning Wednesday afternoon, but starting pitcher Chloe Barber, Ava DiFiore and Jill Baris each had a hit and an RBI to lead the Chieftains to a 4-2 victory over the Villa Novans.

Woonsocket (1-1 Division II) received another solid effort from senior righty Julia Raymond, who struck out five and allowed three earned runs in six innings.

Amanda Almonte hit an RBI single in the fourth inning to give the Novans the lead and freshman Skye Caro belted a solo home run. Centerfielder Natalie Gonzalez was Woonsocket’s defensive star.

CLIPPERS WIN CUMBERLAND – Caitlin McVeigh’s two out single in the bottom of the seventh inning proved to be the difference as Cumberland outlasted NK in a see-saw battle, 7-6, on Wednesday. McVeigh’s single and a throwing error on the play by NK allowed Alexis Parenteau to race all the way around from first with the winning run.

Before McVeigh displayed that walk-off touch, Lacie Grenier drew a one-out intentional walk and was forced out on Jill Ryone’s fielder’s choice. Parenteau then entered the game as a courtesy runner.

Grenier finished two hits and 3 RBI, including a home run and a double. Ryone had a pair of hits and 2 RBI, while Allie Casavant chipped in with two hits.
