STAFF REPORT
NEW YORK — Woonsocket junior Isabella Piette produced the best performance of her career at Saturday’s New York Relays at Icahn Park on Randall’s Island.
Not only did the Villa Novan top a strong field in the hammer throw, but she also smashed her own personal best in the discus by 11 feet.
In the hammer throw, Piette entered the circle for her final throw sitting in second place behind classmate Adelaide Caron. Piette walked out of the circle as the New York Relays champion after uncorking a throw of 158 feet, 5 inches. Caron, who fouled on the final throw the meet, took second with a throw of 155-11.
Piette’s best throw prior to the final round was a 155-1 in the second round.
The junior also delivered a throw of 111-0 in the discus to finish seventh. Toll Gate’s Vanessa Jones was fourth with a throw of 116-10.
A Rhode Islander also won the boys hammer throw as Exeter-West Greenwich’s Owen Spira, who competes for the Ocean State Hammerheads, took the title with a toss of 206-9. Woonsocket sophomore standout Shamrock Thoun continued his strong start to the season with a persona-best of 198-2 to finish second. George Mason-bound Novan Adam Beaudry was fourth with a throw of 1915.
Lincoln senior Tyler Durang also came back up Interstate 95 with a title after he dominated the discus with a throw of 160-10 to beat South Shore (N.Y.) senior Tarike Lavine by 6-10.
