Piette wins Classical hammer
Novan juniors take top two spots
PROVIDENCE – Presented with a chance to cement a spot at the RIIL outdoor state meet, the local track & field delegation proved to swing and connect at Saturday’s Classical Classic.
Woonsocket finished 1-2 in the girls’ varsity hammer with not much separating juniors Isabella Piette and Adelaide Caron. Piette claimed the title (160 feet, 2 inches) with Caron right behind (1601).The victory finished off a superb week for Piette, who set a new personal best in a dual meet Tuesday with a throw of 165-4.
North Smithfield senior Nick Lamoureux leaped 6 feet, 4 inches to take the boys varsity high jump and broke the tape in 50.04 seconds to place second in the 400-meter dash. Another local winner was St. Raphael junior Daniel Akan-Disu in the boys’ long jump (20-9.50).
The girls’ varsity 1,500 run featured some local flavor as Mount St. Charles senior Emmy Belvin edged Cumberland junior Rose Tuomisto. Belvin closed in 4:49.82 while Tuomisto wasn’t too behind at 4:50.27. Tuomisto’s teammate Kiley DeFusco took second in the girls’ 3K (10:08.24) while fellow Cumberland junior Payton Goulding grabbed second in the girls’ shot put (35-2.50). Mount St. Charles junior Jordan Hendricks was another local standout, claiming second in the girls’ 100 dash (12.61 seconds). St. Raphael junior Jayla Grimes finished in the runner-up spot in the girls’ 400 (1:01.11).
Cumberland native/La Salle junior Marshall Vernon soared to a time of 4:03.87 to claim the boys’ 1,500. In the same race, Cumberland High senior Will O’Shea placed second (4:04.76). Burrillville junior Mackenzie Cleary grabbed second in the girls’ javelin throw (108-1).
In the girls’ freshman/sophomore 200-meter dash, North Smithfield ninth grader Sophie Boisvert outlasted the field in a time of 30.47 seconds.
