Mass. to close lane on I-95 South at I-295 in complete new ramp
ATTLEBORO – Commuters should be prepared for a lane closure on Interstate 95 South in the area of Interstate 295 next week or early next month while the state constructs a new ramp.
The state Department of Transportation is working on a $4.7 million project to build a new ramp and bridge over the Ten Mile River from I-295 North to I-95 South.
In order to complete the work, the right travel lane of I-95 South near I-295 will be closed for about six months, according to MassDOT. Until the new ramp is opened, the existing ramp from I-295 North to I-95 South will still be open to traffic.
In addition to the new ramp, the bridge on I-95 over the Ten Mile River will be widened to accommodate the lengthening of the existing acceleration lane, according to MassDOT.
Other road construction, including guardrails and drainage improvements, are also planned. In addition, the existing bridge rail on the east side of the I-95 South bridge over the Ten Mile River, along with guardrails, will be replaced.
The work is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. Lane closures will vary in phases as the work progresses to allow crews to safely shift traffic and allow access for construction operations.
The first phase and lane closure on I-95 is expected to begin May 12. During the second phase, traffic will be returned to normal on I-95 South during construction of the new ramp and the shoulder of the highway will be closed.
A temporary shutdown of the existing ramp will be needed to complete the connection between the new ramp and I-95 South. A detour route will be used, likely occurring over a weekend in the fall.
During the third phase, traffic from I-295 North to I-95 South will use the
newly constructed ramp. At the merge with I-95 South, traffic controls will be used to create a dedicated acceleration lane for traffic to safely enter I-95 South while demolition of the old bridge and con
struction of the new bridge is underway, MassDOT says.
Pavement resurfacing and the installation of permanent markings on I-95 South will be completed using temporary nighttime lane closures once all the other work has been completed, according to MassDOT.
