How Do I Flow?
It’s possible to achieve flow unexpectedly by a confluence of favorable conditions. But those who wish to create those conditions, and increase the chance of flow, can try the following:
• Control the environment. To create the conditions for flow, it’s best to minimize external distractions. Putting aside life’s cares for the moment will greatly increase your chances for flow. If you are someone who enjoys meditation, the spiritual philosophy of Zen will be instructive for those seeking flow. Also, as noted above, you will want to select the right player(s) to join you. More rambunctious or slow-playing analytical types are unlikely to foster the quick, focused turns you’ll need to get in the zone.
• Clear your mental playing field. Similarly, you will want to practice good mental hygiene and rid yourself of negative thoughts, such as what others think of you or your play, or worries about the outcome. You are not your game, and your performance is not a referendum on your worth as a person. Trusting in yourself, building confidence, and playing for the love of playing will be helpful here.
• Passion. As discussed, success requires a desire for success. Determination will propel improvement. Spiritual teacher Gurdijeff passed the following gem of wisdom to us via King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp: “Discipline is a vehicle for joy.” For Fripp, it meant honing his musical craft, but for gamers, it means letting no distractions interfere with game-based pursuits.
