4-H Club News
The San Francisco Valley 4-H Club has been busy so far this year. Along with our regular meetings each month, members have been involved in trainings and community fundraisers and events.
Maegan and Levi Simpson went to Southwest District Officer Training, or SWDOT, on February 7 and 8 in Las Cruces. They met up with some other people from Catron County to learn leadership skills and techniques for working within large groups. One of the activities was cooking dinner together for the group. After dinner, there were more activities followed by an evening playing bunko. There were more training activities the next day, and they headed home around noon.
The March meeting of the San Francisco Valley 4-H Club was held on March 10 at the Glenwood Clinic. It was a very important meeting where the club decided the dates for our annual fundraisers. After the March meeting two members gave their presentations. Maegan Simpson gave her presentation on canning and Alex Hemmer gave her presentation on ceramics.
On March 20, James and Kendra Taylor, Alex Hemmer, and John and Lori Robertson cleaned up the garden at the Community Center. They pulled weeds, removed unwanted trees, and cleaned and pruned the planting beds. Club members also helped Beth Menczer at the Dutch Oven Cook-off April 11 by acting as runners for the cooks, and also sold baked goods and drinks.
The April meeting was held April 14 at the Community Center. After working out the details for the upcoming Bin- go, Kayla Manning spoke about swine show-box essentials, Dallin Parnell gave a presentation on his rabbit project, Colton Parnell told the club about different breeds of goats, and Levi Simpson gave a presentation on Vegetable Gardening.
The annual Spring Bingo was April 18 at the Glenwood Community Center. The Rabies Clinic and bake sale was held April 25 at the Senior Center.
In other news, there will be a Catron County 4-H Council meeting at the “Festival of 4H”. The Festival of 4-H is a training that will be hosted by the Council May 8 at the Re- serve Fairgrounds Exhibit Building, from 9AM to 12PM. Lunch will be a potluck for sides and desserts, but hamburgers and hot dogs will be provided by the Council.
