Square Deal Opens in Aragon
Residents of Aragon think it’s the best thing since sliced bread. Wait—it even includes sliced bread!
Square Deal Store in Aragon opened March 28 with general rejoicing in the whole town, which came out to participate in the festivities of lunch, visiting, reminiscing, touring the new store, and buying bake sale items to benefit Santo Niño Church. Visitors also hailed from Cruzville, Reserve, and even England. Many guests bought raffle tickets, where Skip Price won a load of wood, Kim won a movie basket, and Logan Boone won a crockpot and BBQ grill with utensils and recipe book.
Lucas and Michelle Gutierrez, who previously lived at Rancho Grande, bought Square Deal Store, and have worked for the past several months at renovating. They kept the original shelving, stripped and refinished the hardwood floors, and exposed the ceiling rafters.
The store was originally built in about 1938 by Virginia
and Ernest Castillo. As before, Square Deal is a grocery store. But the Gutierrez’s have added feed in the side room. They plan to provide hay as well, and later hope to restore the gasoline service.
Camille Boone expressed the feeling of many when she said, “It’s sad to see a build- ing sit, and so great to have the store back.”
Mary Najar agreed, adding, “It’s exactly what our community needs!”
