The In Depth Story: Tom, one of four people chosen for the honor, had been steadily accruing directorial credits over the past several years (including helming episodes of B&B as well as several short films) in the hopes that she might have a chance at participating in the prestigious program. “I met with them a few years ago,” the actress shares with Soaps In Depth, “and they said, ‘We love daytime directors because they know how to work and be creative in a short amount of time.’ But they told me I needed a [bigger] body of work, so that’s what I’ve been working on.” Tom says she was initially inspired by
Congratulations to THE BOLD & THE BEAUTIFUL’S Heather Tom (Katie), who was selected to participate in CBS’S 2018-’19 Director’s Initiative, a program aimed at helping upand-coming directors cultivate network relationships and shadow network productions. But what does that mean for the Emmy winner’s future on the soap?

( Flanner y also directed several episodes of GUIDING LIGHT before that show was cancelled.) “I could look at her and say, ‘Okay, she took that on and was successful with it,’” Tom recalls. “It’s also been incredibly helpful to work with a [B&B crew] that’s so supportive. It’s a very safe place where I know I can ask for input on things from people who are incredibly good at what they do.”
Despite the extra hours Tom will be putting in as part of the Director’s Initiative, a spokesperson for the soap says it won’t affect her role on the show. “She will be doing this,” explains the rep, “on B& B’s dark weeks and days off.”
