This week on THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS, Tessa and Mariah are practically glowing as they move in together. Unfortunately, the lovebirds discover that taking their relationship to the next level isn’t as easy as they thought it would be… especially since Tessa may be hiding something that could destroy their relationship!

The In Depth Story: When Mariah first fell for Tessa, she knew that things would be… well, complicated. After all, at the time, Tessa was her brother Noah’s girlfriend, and Mariah hadn’t even realized yet that she was bisexual! While the couple overcame many obstacles — including Tessa stealing Mariah’s diary to use in a song — taking their relationship to the next level might be the biggest one of all!

“For Tessa and Mariah to move in together is a huge deal,” says the songbird’s portrayer, Cait Fairbanks. “Tessa does not let a lot of people into her life, so bringing Mariah into her home is pretty big, especially since there is a lot of stuf f that Tessa hasn’t told Mariah. She’s kind of on the defensive, because she has somebody that she loves in her home — which is her safe spot — and it’s hard for her to adjust to.”

The difficulties of meshing their lives together immediately become apparent when Tessa arrives home to find that Mariah has taken it upon herself to throw out her mattress and buy another. “That definitely creates an issue!” previews Fairbanks. “I know it doesn’t seem like much, but Tessa is a very protective person, and to discover that Mariah just kind of takes something of hers and throws it away without asking… it causes friction!”

While Mariah is shaken by her girlfriend’s reaction, she breathes a sigh of

relief when she later finds a bottle of wine from Tessa with a note apologizing for the blowup and suggesting that they hash out their domestic issues over dinn e r. F a i r - banks says that her alter ego realizes that she overreacted when it came to the mattress, but the scene highlights an important facet of her character. “There are two sides to Tessa,” explains the actress. “There is the Tessa in a relationship, which I think has a lot of projection — ‘This is how I would like a relationship to be’ — and there is the real Tessa, who is very much ‘I need to protect myself!’ “It’s exciting to move in with someone you love,” she continues. “But there are issues with Tessa that make going forward more difficult.”

“It’s very exciting to move in with someone you love. But there are issues with Tessa that make going forward more difficult.”

And part of those issues simply stem from Tessa’s personality, says Fairbanks. “Tessa will always go for the shortcut, the quickest action to get the results she wants in order to solve her problems. And that will always cause conflict and create secrets. I think Tessa has secrets that Cait doesn’t even know!

“But there is one secret in particular,” warns the actress, “that will really hit close to home and be very messy. More messy than explosive, because it plays on our instincts to take care of the ones we love.”

Tessa already has one strike against her for stealing Mariah’s most private thoughts for her own ambition. Will the next secret of Tessa’s be so powerful, so shocking, so offensive that Mariah won’t wait for the third strike to kick her girlfriend to the curb?
