THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS’ Devon has been doing his darnedest to show his family and friends that he’s been coping just fine since Hilary’s tragic death. Yet this week, the cracks in the billionaire’s laid- back façade are beginning to show. Is a downward
The In Depth Story: After pulling an all-nighter at a concer t, Devon tells a concerned Phyllis that his late night (or, rather, early morning!) helped remind him why he’d gotten into the music business in the first place. But his loved ones are becoming increasingly concerned about his partying.
Br yton James, who plays the widower, says that his alter ego may be reassuring everyone that he’s all right, but quite the opposite is true! “He’s using his work environment and partying to distract himself from the loss of Hilary and their child,” he admits. “He’s not only trying to numb himself to his own feelings, but he’s trying to distance himself as much as possible from the invasiveness of the people who are trying to make sure that he’s okay!”
However, the reality is that Devon can’t bear watching everyone else go on with their lives! “From the time of the accident to the hospital to the funeral, he was around a lot of people and had a lot of support. But then ever yone went back to their daily lives while Devon is left by himself to deal with his feelings,” sighs James. “He is the one who has to wake up in his empty bed every day and face the reality alone.”
The actor adds that spending all night at the concert and after-party is Devon’s “first crack at at-
tempting to move forward with his life in the way he thinks is best.”
But that is not the way his family sees things! Cane is quick to lecture his brother- in- law about worrying Shauna by not coming home the previous night. And while Devon admits that he was wrong not to make Shauna aware of his plans, he pushes back when Cane brings up his absence at Thanksgiving. After all, Devon shouts, what he had to be thankful for now resides in a graveyard — and Lily put it there!
“Devon hasn’t completely forgiven her,” says James. “One day, she will be able to come home and live the rest of her life with her family and her husband, and see her children grow up. But because of Lily — in Devon’s mind — he won’t get to experience any of that!
“He gets frustrated that his family doesn’t understand that,” he continues. “They’re not being sensitive to his feelings. Devon is having a hard time, par ticularly with Nate, because he operated on Hilary. And in
“The numbing of his feelings turns into something Devon really doesn’t control too well!”
Devon’s mind, that played a part in what happened to her.”
As he keeps pulling further away from his family, Devon may be one step closer to falling into an emotional abyss! Teases James: “He’s going to be taking himself down a road where the numbing of his feelings turns into something that he really doesn’t control too well!”
“Cane and Nate are always getting into Devon’s business!” sighs the grieving widower’s portrayer.
