In Depth Cover Story
he holidays should be a joyous time spent surrounded by family and friends. And while THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS’ Nikki is surrounded by loved ones, it’s under the worst possible circumstances, with Nick and Victoria praying at their mom’s bedside this week as she lies in a coma after being run down in the street! Can fans expect a little Christmas magic around the corner? Or will the Newman family find themselves facing their darkest days yet?
United In Fear
“Nick and Victoria are really praying for a Christmas miracle!”
“Nick and Victoria, and the rest of the family, really are forced to imagine what life would be like without their mother,” says executive producer/ headwriter Mal Young. “They are really praying for a Christmas miracle. This [ situation] will tug on the heartstrings, where we will see how her children will react to Nikki being in genuine danger, possibly losing her life.
“And,” he adds, “they will have to deal with this without the support of Victor, who usually comes in and fixes everything!”
Interestingly, Nick and Victoria aren’t the only ones affected as Nikki teeters between life and death! “This storyline really ripples out and affects a lot of different people,” reveals Young. “It’s amazing how this tragedy really impacts so many different characters. It’s huge!”
In fact, Victoria’s relationship with Billy is one that may be impacted. “Victoria isn’t over her involvement in J.T.’S demise… and has been sabotaging any chance of happiness for herself because she feels like she doesn’t deserve it,” points out the wordsmith. “Yet she needs a shoulder to cry on, to lean on. She needs that support, and Billy is the perfect person for that. We all want someone to love and love us back, and have someone be there in a time of need. And by God, she is in a time of need!”
Meanwhile, Phyllis is at the hospital to support Nick, which affords her a frontrow seat to observe — and be tweaked by — Billy and Victoria’s new rapport! “She made her choice, which is a good, safe choice for her, but there are a lot of unresolved issues between her (continues)
and Billy, so I think she’s jealous when she sees him going back to Victoria,” chuckles Young. “She says she doesn’t want Billy — but she doesn’t want anyone else to have him either!”
A Turn For The Worse
Still, those dramas fade into the background when Nick demands an update on his mother’s condition from Nate. Instead of delivering a hopeful message about Nikki pulling through, the doctor advises Nick to prepare himself for the worst! “It’s one of those moments that we all fear,” says Young. “I think everyone has it in the back of their mind that you could lose a parent or a family member. It shocks Nick. Suddenly, he realizes, ‘ This is serious! This could be it!’”
Nick immediately calls Victoria, who has allowed Billy to pull her away to the Christmas party Sharon is throwing at Crimson Lights. “Sharon wanted a party to pull the community together, and everyone is having a good time,” previews Young. “That’s often when bad news comes. It’s that chilling moment
when you get that phone call at four in the morning or, like Victoria, you are in the middle of a party. Life is looking great, then it spins out of control! Victoria — and Jack, Sharon, everyone there — drops what they’re doing because this is Nikki Newman!”
At the hospital, everyone gathers to hold hands and pray for Nikki. Well… almost everyone. “There is going to be the question of, ‘Where’s Victor?’” teases the scribe. “Why hasn’t he come? There is a feeling that something or somebody is looming!”
Could it be The Mustache… or the Grim Reaper? Young suggests that Y&R fans grab a cozy blanket and some hot chocolate as they settle in for what happens next! “This is so emotional with everyone pulling together for Nikki,” he previews. “We’ve got a beautiful twist that no one will see coming!”
It isn’t just Nick on whom Victoria is leaning in these dark days. She’s also relying heavily on her ex-husband, Billy… much to Phyllis’ chagrin.
When Nikki’s loved ones look to Nate for reassurance, what they get instead is… well, you can tell by the looks on their faces.
As bad as things may look, Y&R’S executive producer/headwriter hints that he’s got a wonderful surprise in store.
The one person who isn’t at Nikki’s bedside is the one person who most needs to be there: the love of her life, Victor! Where the heck is the tycoon?
