Top Executive Out!
OUT In a plot twist worthy of a soap opera, executive producer/headwriter Mal Young has left his posts at THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS!
The In Depth Story: Confirming his exit to entertainment Web site Showbiz 411, Young said, “I felt like it was a good time to move on. Never a good idea to get too settled on a long-running soap, and I achieved all that I and CBS set out to do: improved scripts and production values.
“I have a project of my own,” he added, “that I’ve been developing and want to pursue that now. Plus, running a show like this is allconsuming, and [I] want to get a bit of my life back — and see my family occasionally!”
Young joined Y&R as a producer in early 2016, taking over as EP when Jill Farren Phelps left. The following year, Young also took over as headwriter, replacing Sally Sussman Morina and Kay Alden. During the Brit’s two-year stint, he has been credited with having elevated the show’s production standards. However, he also faced criticism for setting in motion too many plot-driven tales, introducing too many newbies and rewriting history.
Under Young’s tenure, the soap saw a slew of frontburner stars exit, among them Melissa Claire Egan (exChelsea), Eileen Davidson (ex-ashley) and Mishael Morgan (ex-hilary). Emmy-winning 40-year veteran Doug Davidson (Paul) was essentially written off the show. ( Not surprisingly, the news of Young’s departure has fans hop-

ing that Genoa City will soon see its police chief back at his desk.)
According to Daytime Confidential, former executive producer/headwriter Josh Griffith, who returned to Y&R last August as a producer, will step in as headwriter, while longtime supervising producer Anthony Morina (who is married to Sussman Morina) will be the new executive producer.
After two years helming Y&R, Young has moved on.
