Child porn video on social media triggers investigation
CECIL COUNTY — An investigation is continuing after Cecil County Sheriff’s Office detectives learned that a video showing a juvenile engaged in a sex act is circulating on social media, according to police.
Lt. Michael Holmes, a CCSO spokesman, reported that the investigation started on Thursday after administrators at a Cecil County Public Schools school — which Holmes declined to identify — learned about the existence of the video and, in turn, brought it to the attention of an agency school resources deputy assigned to that school.
“We’ve identified the person,” Holmes said, referring to the juvenile who appears in the video, adding, “Due to the sensitive nature of this case and the ongoing investigation, I’m not going to comment on the content of the video or identify the student or the school.”
As of Friday afternoon, part of the investigation focused on tracking the disseminations of that video on social media, according to Holmes.
“There are no charges at this time. We may consult with the Cecil County State’s Attorney’s Office,” Holmes said, before cautioning the public, “Every time a video like this gets distributed or shared, by law, that is considered distribution of pornography, which is a crime.”
CCPS officials posted this notification on the school system’s Facebook page on Thursday:
”The Cecil County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating a pornographic video of a minor that may be circulating around the county. The Sheriff’s Office has asked that we communicate with all families in an effort to make everyone aware of the serious consequences associated with the possession or distribution of pornography.
Anyone found to have content of this nature on a cell phone or electronic device will be subject to the criminal charge of Possession of Child Pornography. If it is found that someone has shared pornographic content with others, that person would face an additional charge of Distribution of Child Pornography. These are serious charges.
Please discuss this with your child and impress upon them the very serious consequences, both disciplinary and legal, that one would face if found to possess content of this nature. If a student receives or is made aware of this type of content, they need to report it to an adult immediately.
Please contact your child’s school or the Cecil County Sheriff’s Office if you have any additional questions regarding this topic.”
