Ge­orge Ed­ward Cal­la­han

Ge­orge Ed­ward Cal­la­han, 94, passed away on July 2nd. He was the third of four sons born to James and Effie Cal­la­han in Cleve­land, OH. A 1941 grad­u­ate of Cathe­dral Latin School, Ge­orge en­listed in the Army Air Corps and be­came a pi­lot. He was pre­de­ceased by his three broth­ers, James, Robert and Paul, and their wives.

In 1944 Ge­orge mar­ried the love of his life, Eileen Evans, who gave birth to their daugh­ter, Bar­bara, while he served over­seas. They would have four more chil­dren, Pa­tri­cia, Ge­orge Jr., Daniel and Richard.

Ge­orge and Eileen were trans­ferred to NY with AT& T in 1954 and raised their fam­ily in Man­has­set, LI and Smoke Rise, NJ. Ge­orge re­tired from Bell Sys­tems in 1984 and they chose Pine­hurst, NC as their new home, even­tu­ally mov­ing to Char­lotte, NC to be closer to fam­ily. Ge­orge was ac­tive in the Par­ishes of St. Gabriel and St. Matthew Catholic Churches. He and Eileen lived their re­tire­ment to the fullest in honor of their son, Ge­orge Jr., who passed away from can­cer in 1984. Af­ter Eileen lost her brave bat­tle with Alzheimer’s, Ge­orge found love again and mar­ried Ber­nice Jakel, who sur­vives him along with his chil­dren, Barb and her hus­band John As­la­nian, Pat Cal­la­han, all of West­field, NJ, Dan and his wife Laura Cal­la­han of Myrtle Beach, SC and Rich of Char­lotte, NC, and ten grand­chil­dren, Lisa, John, Christopher, Meg, Kim­ber­ley, Pati, Amy, Matthew, Abby, and Erin. He was pre­de­ceased by his grand­daugh­ter, Sally, and was blessed to be sur­vived by 27 great- grand­chil­dren.

A Mass of Chris­tian Burial will be held at St. Matthew Catholic Church, Day Chapel, Char­lotte, NC on Wed­nes­day, July 11, 2018 at 1: 00 PM.
