CHAR­LOTTE - Panzie Mer­i­lyn Miller Stevens, 83, passed away un­ex­pect­edly on July 11, 2018 at her home. She was born Oc­to­ber 4, 1934 in Paint Lick, KY, the youngest child and only daugh­ter of the late Charles Joseph and Edna Mae (nee Sparks) Miller.

Mrs. Stevens grad­u­ated from the Foun­da­tion School at Berea and at­tended Berea Col­lege for Voice and Pi­ano per­for­mance, later trans­fer­ring to Georgetown Col­lege earn­ing a So­ci­ol­ogy BA. Re­ceiv­ing her teach­ing cer­tifi­cate shortly there­after, she be­gan a 40year ca­reer with a fo­cus on grade school spe­cial needs chil­dren. Later, as part of her con­tin­u­ing in­ter­est in grade school ed­u­ca­tion, she com­pleted a Master’s De­gree in Spe­cial Ed­u­ca­tion from Univer­sity of Toledo. Dur­ing her work­ing ca­reer she was very ac­tive in the churches she at­tended and typ­i­cally vol­un­teered as the Min­is­ter of Mu­sic, singing in the choir, or play­ing the pi­ano and or­gan for ser­vices.

Af­ter re­tir­ing from teach­ing, Mrs. Stevens spent sev­eral years earn­ing a Di­vin­ity Di­ploma from Duke Univer­sity and re­ceiv­ing an ap­point­ment as a lo­cal Pas­tor in the United Methodist Church of Western North Carolina. Re­tir­ing from the United Methodist Church, she spent her time help­ing raise two in­cred­i­ble grand­daugh­ters un­til fi­nally re­tir­ing into a quiet life in Char­lotte, NC. In ad­di­tion to church mu­sic, Mrs. Stevens also loved to quilt, cro­chet and needle­point, and make her own clothes.

Left to cher­ish her mem­o­ries are her son and daugh­ter-in- law, Joseph Cleve­land and Nella (nee Sum­mey) Stevens of Char­lotte, NC; grand­daugh­ters, El­iz­a­beth Mer­i­lyn Stevens of Char­lotte and Kather­ine Re­becca Stevens of Greenville, SC and sev­eral nieces and neph­ews. In ad­di­tion to her par­ents, she was pre­ceded in death by her older brothers, Jimmy, Ken­neth andWayne Miller.

The fam­ily will receive friends from 12: 00pm un­til 1: 00pm, Wed­nes­day, July 18th at McLean Fu­neral Direc­tors, Bel­mont. A fu­neral ser­vice will im­me­di­ately fol­low in the Bum­gard­ner Chapel with Rev. Holly Evensen of­fi­ci­at­ing.
