The Charlotte Observer (Sunday) - - Obituaries -

CHARLOTTE - Buddy Thorne, 86, died in peace August 22, 2018 at Harris Hospice Unit in Charlotte, N.C. Buddy is survived by his beloved bride of 62 years, Pat Thorne; daughters Susan Thorne (David Johnson) and Becky Thorne Tin (Noell); grandchildren Michelle Moffatte (Ian), Jennifer Schrand, Carl Brzorad, Will Brzorad, and Kiran Tin; and great- granddaughter Lily.

An avid drummer and lover of jazz, Buddy played in various jazz bands throughout his youth, once sitting in with the great Dizzy Gillespie and Buddy Rich, and playing in his own band, The Sounds Unlimited.

After retiring from the telephone company, Buddy became a local icon in some circles in Charlotte, known for riding his three-wheel trike with cigar- in-mouth to visit with friends at Lupie’s Cafe, Thomas Street Tavern, and Angry Ale’s. One of Buddy’s pastors at St Luke’s Lutheran joked that “Buddy has a barstool ministry.” Buddy left a huge footprint in a lot of hearts.

His passing will be marked by a memorial service at St Luke’s Lutheran Church, 3200 Park Road, Charlotte, at 11 am on November 18, 2018; his inurnment prior to the service will be private. A Celebration of Life in Buddy’s honor with live jazz at Lupie’s Cafe will follow and is open to the public beginning at 1: 00 pm. In lieu of f lowers, please make memorial gifts in Buddy’s honor to St. Luke’s Lutheran Church.
