CHAR­LOTTE - Daniel N. Hoff­man, Ph.D., aged 75, passed away on Oc­to­ber 2nd, 2018, four days short of his 76th birth­day. He passed peace­fully at home, on his own terms, af­ter a sud­den di­ag­no­sis and brave strug­gle with can­cer. Dan was born in Chicago to Leo and Estelle Hoff­man, whose move to Char­lotte brought their son here. Dan is sur­vived by his wife of 32 years, Dorothea Hoff­man; his sis­ter, Michele (Mickey) Hoff­man and her spouse Miles Gold­fein of Cal­i­for­nia; his aunt Irene Goren 98 of Chicago; many cousins, and a world­wide net­work of friends and col­leagues. Dan had an ex­tremely ac­tive pro­fes­sional and in­tel­lec­tual life. He grad­u­ated 11th in his class of 1963 from the Univer­sity of Chicago with a ma­jor in po­lit­i­cal science. He re­ceived his Cum Laude LLB. in 1966 from Har­vard Law School (Law Re­view) and was ad­mit­ted to the Bar, Dis­trict of Columbia, in 1967. Dan grad­u­ated Cum Laude with his Po­lit­i­cal Science, Ph.D. from M.I.T. in 1977. In 1983 he took a pro­fes­sor po­si­tion at John­son C. Smith Univer­sity, where he taught un­til his 2008 re­tire­ment, ul­ti­mately named Pro­fes­sor Emer­i­tus in 2013, an honor he cher­ished. Dan was Char­lotte’s num­ber one Cubs fan.
